Greece relegated after loss to Bulgaria

Bulgaria beat Greece 2-0 in the relegation play-off at the 2020 Fed Cup Group I competition.

In the opening singles match, Greece’s Valentini Grammatikopoulou (world number 301) took on Bulgaria’s Isabella Shinikova (world number 165). The match was close early on, with the score being 3-3 in the first set. However, Shinikova went on to win nine of the next ten games to take the match 6-3 6-1 and put Bulgaria up 1-0 overall.

World number 258 Despina Papamichail then faced Viktoriya Tomova (world number 143) of Bulgaria, in the second singles match. The 26-year-old from Preveza went up an early break in the first set, but Tomova came back to win it 6-2. In the second set, Papamichail also had an early break and led 2-0, but Tomova ultimately won the set 6-4 to clinch a 2-0 win for Bulgaria. The doubles match was not played.

Team Greece have now been relegated to the Europe/Africa Group II for 2021. With world number 21 Maria Sakkari back on the team, Greece will be expected to regain promotion to Group I.
