Greece to play Olympic qualifiers in Canada

Greece will play against Canada and China in the first stage of the 2020 Olympic qualification tournament in Victoria.

The Greeks, placed in Pot 1, were drawn into Group A of the Canadian qualification competition which will take place in Victoria. Host nation Canada (Pot 4) and China (Pot 5) are the remaining two nations in the group.

Uruguay, Turkey and the Czech Republic will compete against each other in Group B of the qualification tournament in Canada.

Two teams from both of the two groups qualify for the semi-finals of the qualification tournament. The winner of the competition then qualifies for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.

There are four separate qualification tournaments, with the winning team of each competition progressing to the Olympics. Here is the full result of the Olympic qualification tournament draw:

The qualification competition will be played between 23-28 June.

Japan, Nigeria, Argentina, America, Iran, France, Spain and Australia have already qualified for the Olympic Games.

Famous American coach Rick Pitino, who is also the boss of Panathinaikos, will be at the helm of the Greek national team for the qualifying tournament. Greece were knocked out in the second group stage of the 2019 FIBA World Cup under the leadership of Thanasis Skourtopoulos.

Canada and China suffered elimination in the first group phase of the World Cup in China.
