In the first round of games, Greece U17 rescued a dramatic 1:1 draw against host nation the Republic of Ireland, but they had no such luck on Monday as Belgium claimed a comfortable 3:0 victory. After two matches, the young Greeks sit in fourth position of Group A, with Ireland and the Czech Republic level on two points apiece. The Belgians are top with four points.

THE MATCH

Having started with the initiative, the Belgians managed to open the scoring within 21 minutes, as Anderlecht prospect Chris Kalulika beat Greek goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis to hand his team the lead.

In the box seat, Belgium applied plenty of pressure on the Greek defence, and with three minutes remaining in the half Thibo Baeten of Club Brugge hit the jackpot to double their advantage. The Belgians registered 11 shots in the maiden 45 minutes compared to Greece’s four.

At half time, two substitutions were made for Greece, but it made little difference as Belgium continued dictating the flow of play. Baeten netted his second in stoppage time to secure the 3:0 win for the Belgians.

Greece will play the Czech Republic on Thursday in the third, decisive match of Group A.
