Placed in Group 8 with Scotland, Germany and Norway, the young Greeks are battling for a place at the tournament finals. In order to qualify for the U17 European championships, teams have to finish in first position of their respective groups or become one of the seven best runners up. The competition will be held in England between the 4th and 20th of May.

To their huge advantage, the Greeks are hosting the elite qualifying round in Patras, a factor which could prove crucial.

Greece U17 impressed in the opening game with Scotland, picking up an important victory in front of the home crowd. Giannis Fakis, a 16-year old on the books of Xanthi, scored the only goal after 56 minutes to give the Greeks a vital win.

Konstantinos Thymianis was shown a straight red card during the latter stages, but Greece calmly kept the Scots at bay, outshooting the opponents 10-6 and boasting the majority of scoring opportunities.

As a result of the 2:2 draw between Germany and Norway, Greece U17 currently occupy first place. The next match will take place on March 24 against the Germans.
