Seven teams have booked their ticket to the quarter-finals of the Greek Cup with just one spot up for grabs between Asteras Tripolis and AEK. The two clubs played to a 1-1 draw in Tripoli in the first leg and will meet again on January 30th for the return leg at the OAKA Olympic Stadium in Athens.

The quarter-final lineup in the Cup will only consist of teams from Greece’s first division, the Super League, including Atromitos, Olympiacos, Panathinaikos, Aris, Lamia, Panetolikos, PAOK, and either AEK or Asteras Tripolis.

The draw for the quarter-finals is scheduled for Thursday, January 23rd. All nine teams (Asteras/AEK will be listed on one ticket) will be placed into one pot, without seedings. Similar to the last round, the games will be played over two legs. The first team selected in the draw will play the first leg at home, and the second team selected will play the second leg at home.

Possible introduction of VAR

After many controversial refereeing decisions in the round of 16, the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) is considering the usage of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in the quarter-final stage of the competition. VAR, which is used in the Super League, has not been used in the Cup this season as stadiums of teams from lower divisions are unable to support the new technology. However, since only Super League teams will compete in the competition going forward, VAR may be used for the remainder of the 2019/20 Greek Cup.

The consensus from the clubs is that VAR is preferred in these games to avoid refereeing errors. If VAR is approved for the Cup, the home team will be responsible for covering the costs to use the technology, which equates to 5,000 euros per game - a reasonable number for the Super League clubs.

For now, VAR will only be used in the final as it was used last year.
