The coronavirus pandemic has sadly claimed thousands of lives since it emerged in China during the latter stages of 2019. At the moment, the death toll stands at 49 in Greece, with 1314 cases of the disease recorded. All sport in the country is currently indefinitely suspended with the situation yet to drastically improve.

Greek athletes are doing their bit in order to help the medical cause.

According to reports from Sportime, Alanyaspor players Georgios Tzavellas, Manolis Siopis, and Tasos Bakasetas raised the idea of funding a new intensive care unit, which will help ease the strain on the national medical health service. Players representing AEK, Olympiacos, Panathinaikos, PAOK, and other Super League clubs immediately responded positively to the initiative.

If it is possible, they also want to fund the creation of a second intensive care unit. The media have stated that funds raised by the players are already quite high.

The Pan-Hellenic Association of Professional Basketball Players has also expressed its desire to help.

As for sport itself, ESAKE has called for the Basket League season to be permanently ended now, while the Super League reportedly wants to resume play in late May if the state issues the green light.
