Greeks Abroad Review: Donis hits the target again, goalkeeper Lamprou wins Eredivisie


AGONAsport’s Shaun Nicolaides rounds up the performances of Greeks playing in foreign leagues in this week’s Greeks Abroad Review.

In Germany, Anastasios Donis was among the goals again, striking the second marker and making an assist for the first in a 3:0 victory for VfB Stuttgart against Wolfsburg. Elsewhere, Sebastian Vasiliadis scored twice for Paderborn in the German second tier, while Lefteris Matsoukas netted an important goal in Serbia and Vangelis Pavlidis struck gold for Willem II.

Over in the Netherlands, goalkeeper Konstantinos Lamprou became a Dutch champion with Ajax, with the 27-year-old having made two Eredivisie appearances this season for the Amsterdam giants.

MAIN MEN (Comprised of current/former national team players):

Sokratis Papastathopoulos (Arsenal/English Premier League): Missed the 3:1 win against Burnley on the road. Midweek, he helped Arsenal qualify for the final of the UEFA Europa League by playing 90 minutes in the 4:2 victory over Valencia.

Konstantinos Mavropanos (Arsenal/English Premier League): Started the 3:1 triumph at Burnley and was replaced after 34 minutes with an injury. Didn’t play in the 4:2 win against Valencia.

Jose Cholevas (Watford/English Premier League): Shown a straight red card in a 1:4 loss to West Ham United at home in the 48th minute.

Panagiotis Retsos (Bayer Leverkusen/German Bundesliga): Did not participate in a 1:1 home draw with Schalke 04.

Konstantinos Stafylidis (Augsburg/German Bundesliga): Introduced as a substitute in the 57th minute with Augsburg losing 3:4 against Hertha Berlin.

Anastasios Donis (VfB Stuttgart/German Bundesliga): Scored the second goal in a 3:0 win against Wolfsburg and dished out an assist for the opening marker. Replaced after 79 minutes.

Stefanos Kapino (Werder Bremen/German Bundesliga): Sat on the bench with his team beating Hoffenheim 1:0 on the road.

Kyriakos Papadopoulos (Hamburg/German Bundesliga 2): Missed the heavy 1:4 setback at Paderborn in the second tier of German football.

Kostas Manolas (AS Roma/Serie A): Helped Roma beat champions Juventus 2:0 by playing the entirety of the match.

Charalampos Lykogiannis (Cagliari/Serie A): Remained an unused substitute with Cagliari losing 1:2 to Lazio at home.

Orestis Karnezis (Napoli/Serie A): Watched Napoli defeat SPAL from the comfort of the substitutes’ bench.

Dimitris Nikolaou (Empoli/Serie A): Kept on the bench with Empoli defeating Sampdoria 2:1.

Panagiotis Tachtsidis (Lecce/Serie B): Played the full 90 minutes of a 2:1 triumph over Spezia.

Apostolos Vellios (Waasland-Beveren/Jupiler League): Didn’t feature in a 2:1 victory against Cercle Brugge.

Odisseas Vlachodimos (Benfica/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Took a yellow card in stoppage time against Rio Ave. Conceded two goals as Benfica emerged victorious 3:2 as they close in on the title.

Andreas Samaris (Benfica/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Played the entire 90 minutes with Benfica defeating Rio Ave 3:2 on the road.

Dimitris Siovas (Leganes/La Liga): Stayed on the pitch for the full 90 minutes as Leganes conceded a 0:2 loss to Espanyol at home.

Konstantinos Mitroglou (Galatasaray/Turkish Super Lig): Did not play in a thrilling 3:2 win against Rizespor with Galatasaray scoring twice in the dying moments.

Georgios Tzavellas (Alanyaspor/Turkish Super Lig): Played 90 minutes of the 1:2 defeat against Besiktas away from home.

Carlos Zeca (Copenhagen/Danish Superliga): Didn’t participate in an emphatic 0:2 loss at the hands of second-placed Midtjylland. Copenhagen have already been crowned champions.

Alexandros Tziolis (Al Fayha/Saudi Professional League): Started the 0:0 draw against Al-Raed and was substituted in the 88th minute of the game.

GERMANY

Dimitris Diamantakos (St Pauli/German Bundesliga 2): Included in the starting line-up to play Bochum and was replaced in the 82nd minute.

Sebastian Vasiliadis (Paderborn/German Bundesliga 2): Scored twice in a crucial 4:1 triumph over Hamburg at home. Substituted with six minutes remaining.

FRANCE

Panagiotis Vlachodimos (Nimes/Ligue 2): Didn’t feature in a 1:0 home victory against AS Monaco.

HOLLAND

Pantelis Hatzidiakos (AZ Alkmaar/Eredivisie): Kept the bench warm as AZ defeated PSV Eindhoven 1:0.

Konstantinos Lamprou (Ajax/Eredivisie): Remained an unused substitute with Ajax thrashing Utrecht 4:1 in Amsterdam to become Champions of Holland. Not in the squad for the 2:3 loss to Tottenham in the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League.

Lazaros Lamprou (Fortuna Sittard/Eredivisie): Didn’t move from the bench as Fortuna Sittard conceded a 0:3 defeat at the hands of Groningen.

Marios Vrousai (Willem II/Eredivisie): Emerged from the bench after 70 minutes of the 2:3 home setback against FC Emmen.

Vangelis Pavlidis (Willem II/Eredivisie): Registered the first goal as Willem II eventually lost 2:3 to FC Emmen in Holland. Played 90 minutes.

James Efmorfidis (Almere/Eerste Divisie): Used as a substitute in the 67th minute of a 2:2 draw with Cambuur.

BELGIUM

Giorgos Galitsios (Mouscron/Jupiler League): Not included in the squad for a 3:3 away draw at St. Gilloise.

Charis Charisis (Kortrijk/Jupiler League): Joined the action in the 61st minute of a confident 5:0 beating of Zulte Waregem on the road.

Stergos Marinos (Charleroi/Jupiler League): Didn’t move from the bench with Charleroi breezing past Beerschot Wilrijk 3:0.

PORTUGAL

Nikolaos Ioannidis (Maritimo/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Did not participate in a 2:3 loss to Portimonense.

CZECH REPUBLIC

Giorgos Katidis (Pribram/Czech First League): Missed the 1:0 win over Karvina and the 4:1 victory against Bohemians 1905.

Athanasios Fokaidis (MFK Karvina/Czech First League): Made his senior debut in the 87th minute of the 0:1 loss to Pribram. Wasn’t in the squad for the 3:0 win against Dukla Prague.

TURKEY

Stelios Kitsiou (Ankaragucu/Turkish Super Lig): Played the full 90 minutes in a 1:2 loss to Istanbul Basaksehir.

Andreas Tatos (Altay/First League): Was given the entire 90 minutes on the pitch as Altay lost 1:3 to Osmanlispor.

Andreas Vasilogiannis (Umraniyespor/First League): Used as a substitute for the second half against Istanbulspor at home. Umraniyespor were defeated 1:3.

SWITZERLAND

Konstantinos Dimitriou (FC Basel/Swiss Super League): Not a member of the matchday squad as Basel lost 1:3 to runaway leaders Young Boys.

SWEDEN

Giannis Anestis (IFK Goteborg/Allsvenskan): Gave an excellent performance with his team beating Norrkoping 2:1 on the road.

SERBIA

Nemanja Milojevic (Vojvodina/Super Liga): Started the match against Partizan Belgrade at home and was substituted after 64 minutes of play. Vojvodina lost 1:2.

Diamantis Chouchoumis (Vojvodina/Super Liga): Missed the 1:2 defeat to Partizan Belgrade.

Lefteris Matsoukas (Dinamo Vranje/Super Liga): Scored in the 2:1 win against Spartak Subotica and played the entire 90 minutes.

BULGARIA

Antonis Stergiakis (Slavia Sofia/Parva Liga): Not included in the squad for the 1:0 win against Botev Vratsa in Sofia.

Theofilos Kouroupis (FC Vereya/Parva Liga): Vereya did not compete in the relegation playoffs against Septemvri Sofia, resulting in a 0:6 technical aggregate defeat.

SLOVAKIA

Lazaros Rota (MFK Zemplín Michalovce/Fortuna Liga): Did not play in a 0:3 loss to Ruzomberok.

Christos Kountoriotis (MFK Zemplín Michalovce/Fortuna Liga): Used as a substitute in the 68th minute of the 0:3 defeat against Ruzomberok at home.

ROMANIA

Aris Soiledis (FC Botosani/Romanian Liga 1): Wasn’t in the squad to play Calarasi on the road. FC Botosani earned a 2:0 victory.

Giorgos Koutroubis (Concordia/Romanian Liga 1): Substituted on the brink of half time after starting the 0:1 defeat to FC Hermannstadt.

Athanasios Papazoglou (Dinamo Bucuresti/Romanian Liga 1): Didn’t play in the 2:0 home win over Gaz Metan in Bucharest.

Chrysovolantis Kozoronis (Petrolul/Romanian Liga 2): Missed the overwhelming 9:1 victory against Dacia Unirea Braila.

Giorgos Sarris (Petrolul/Romanian Liga 2): Did not play in the 9:1 win over Dacia Unirea Braila at home.

AUSTRIA

Anastasios Avlonitis (Sturm Graz/Austrian Bundesliga): Substituted after 67 minutes of a 1:3 home defeat to Austria Vienna.

Kosmas Gezos (Austria Klagenfurt/Austrian Bundesliga 2): Played 90 minutes of the 1:3 defeat to Amstetten in the second division.

BELARUS

Giorgos Katsikas (Dynamo Brest/Belarusian Premier League): Kept on the bench with Dynamo Brest easily beating Gorodeja 4:0 at home.

POLAND

Giannis Mystakidis (Górnik Zabrze/Ekstraklasa): Missed the 1:0 away victory against Legnica and the 0:1 loss to Plock on Tuesday.

Giorgos Mygas (Sosnowiec/Ekstraklasa): Picked up a yellow card while playing the entire 90 minutes of a damaging 0:2 defeat to Arka. Played the full match and was booked against Korona with Sosnowiec losing 0:2.

HUNGARY

Theodoros Berios (Kisvarda/OTP Bank Liga): Played the full 90 minutes against Paks as Kisvarda conceded a 0:1 defeat.

Stavros Tsoukalas (Kisvarda/OTP Bank Liga): Started the 0:1 loss to Paks and was eventually substituted with four minutes left on the clock.

AZERBAIJAN

Vangelis Platellas (Neftchi Baku/Premier League): Played the entirety of a 2:3 loss to Qarabaq in Baku.
