Greeks Abroad Review: Kitsiou, Tzavellas score in Turkey 

AGONAsport’s Shaun Nicolaides rounds up the performances of Greeks playing in other leagues in this week’s Greeks Abroad Review.

In Turkey, Georgios Tzavellas grabbed a rare goal for Alanyaspor in the Cup, while Stelios Kitsiou netted a vital equaliser for Ankaragucu at Antalyaspor to secure a thrilling 2-2 draw for his team in the Super Lig. Kitsiou, 26, had also scored the equalising goal against Galatasaray last week.

Elsewhere, Vangelis Pavlidis maintained his strong run of form for Willem II, hitting the target in a 3-0 victory against Sparta in the Dutch Cup. Struggling PSV striker, Konstantinos Mitroglou, also registered a goal in the same competition.

MAIN MEN (Comprised of current/former national team players):

Sokratis Papastathopoulos (Arsenal/English Premier League): Did not participate in a 0-0 draw at Everton.

Konstantinos Mavropanos (Arsenal/English Premier League): Sat on the bench in the match against Everton on the road.

Jose Cholevas (Watford/English Premier League): Didn’t play in the important 2-0 triumph over Manchester United at home.

Nikos Karelis (Brentford/English Championship): The striker is on the sidelines with a long-term injury. This week, Brentford played to a 1-1 draw at West Bromwich Albion.

Panagiotis Retsos (Bayer Leverkusen/German Bundesliga): Started the 1-0 victory at Mainz and was replaced at the half-time break.

Konstantinos Stafylidis (Hoffenheim/German Bundesliga): Remained on the bench with Hoffenheim defeating Borussia Dortmund 2-1 at home. 

Stefanos Kapino (Werder Bremen/German Bundesliga): The back-up goalkeeper was an unused substitute in the 1-0 defeat at Cologne.

Sebastian Vasiliadis (Paderborn/German Bundesliga): Missed a 2-1 home victory over Eintracht Frankfurt.

Kyriakos Papadopoulos (Hamburg/German Bundesliga 2): The ostracized defender did not take part in the 2-2 draw against Darmstadt.

Kostas Manolas (Napoli/Serie A): Helped Napoli defeated Sassuolo 2-1 on the road by playing the full 90 minutes.

Orestis Karnezis (Napoli/Serie A): Not included in the squad to face Sassuolo.

Panagiotis Tachtsidis (Lecce/Serie A): Received a yellow card in the 3-2 loss to Bologna, before being substituted at half time.

Charalampos Lykogiannis (Cagliari/Serie A): Started the game against Udinese and was substituted after 45 minutes. Cagliari went on to lose 2-1.

Dimitris Nikolaou (Empoli/Serie B): Used as a substitute in the 74th minute of a 1-1 draw  with Salernitana on the road.

Odisseas Vlachodimos (Benfica/Portuguese Primeira Liga): On the bench in the 2-1 win against Braga in the Portuguese Cup, and wasn’t included in the squad for a 2-2 draw at Setubal in the League Cup.

Andreas Samaris (Benfica/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Emerged as a substitute in the 78th minute of the 2-1 triumph over Braga. Didn’t compete against Setubal on Saturday.

Dimitris Siovas (Leganes/La Liga): The injured defender missed the 2-1 win against Andorra in the Spanish Cup and the 2-0 triumph over Espanyol in La Liga.

Vasilis Lampropoulos (Deportivo/La Liga 2): Missed the 2-0 win at Illueca in the Spanish Cup, but he did compete for the full 90 minutes and receive a yellow card in the 2-1 victory against Tenerife in La Liga 2.

Efthymis Koulouris (Toulouse/Ligue 1): Played 90 minutes of a 4-1 loss to Olympique Lyonnais in the League Cup. At the weekend, he was used as a substitute in the 38th minute of a 3-0 away defeat against Nice.

Anastasios Donis (Reims/Ligue 1): Used as a substitute in the 61st minute of a 1-0 League Cup win against Montpellier, and he then emerged in the 52nd minute of a 1-1 Ligue 1 draw with Olympique Lyonnais.

Konstantinos Mitroglou (PSV Eindhoven/Eredivisie): Scored and played 90 minutes against GVVV as PSV claimed a 2-1 victory in extra time in the Dutch Cup. Did not participate in a 4-1 win over Zwolle in the Eredivisie.

Pantelis Hatzidiakos (AZ Alkmaar/Eredivisie): The injured defender wasn’t available to compete in the 3-0 Dutch Cup win against Groene Ster and the 3-0 defeat to Sparta in the league.

Marios Vrousai (Willem II/Eredivisie): Used as a substitute in the 66th minute of the 3-0 Cup win against Sparta. He then appeared from the bench with 10 minutes remaining of a 0-0 home Eredivisie draw with Fortuna Sittard.

Vangelis Pavlidis (Willem II/Eredivisie): Scored the winning goal while playing 73 minutes of the 3-0 triumph over Sparta at home. Played 90 minutes against Fortuna Sittard on Saturday.

Tasos Bakasetas (Alanyaspor/Turkish Super Lig): Used as a substitute in the 57th minute of a 7-1 Turkish Cup thrashing of Adanaspor. The Greek attacker played 90 minutes against Denizlispor as Alanyaspor triumphed 5-1 on the road.

Manolis Siopis (Alanyaspor/Turkish Super Lig): Played 90 minutes against Adanaspor and missed the league game with Denizlispor.

Georgios Tzavellas (Alanyaspor/Turkish Super Lig): Scored for his club in the 7-1 triumph over Adanaspor, playing 68 minutes. Sat on the bench against Denizlispor.

Panagiotis Kone (Western United/A-League): Included in the starting line-up against the Sydney Wanderers, receiving a yellow card and being substituted in the 40th minute.

GERMANY

Dimitris Diamantakos (St. Pauli/German Bundesliga 2): Did not compete in a 3-0 win against Arminia at home.

Ioannis Gelios (Holstein/German Bundesliga 2): Left on the bench as Holstein played to a 2-2 draw at Sandhausen.

Panagiotis Vlachodimos (Grossaspach/Liga 3): Started the 1-1 tie against Duisburg and was substituted in stoppage time at the end of the second half.

NETHERLANDS

Konstantinos Lamprou (Vitesse/Eredivisie): Given a chance in the Dutch Cup and didn’t concede any goals in a comfortable 4-0 win against ODIN. Sat on the bench in a 3-0 victory over VVV Venlo in the Eredivisie.

Giorgos Strezos (Willem II/Eredivisie): Didn’t play in either the 3-0 win against Sparta or the 0-0 draw with Fortuna Sittard.

James Efmorfidis (Almere City/Eerste Divisie): Played 90 minutes of a 2-0 league win over RJC Roda.

BELGIUM

Stergos Marinos (Charleroi/Jupiler League): Sat on the bench during the 2-0 Belgian Cup loss at Zulte Waregem and the 1-1 draw with Charleroi in the Jupiler League.

Nikos Kenourgios (Zulte Waregem/Jupiler League): Missed the 2-0 win against Charleroi in the Cup and the 2-0 defeat to Cercle Brugge in the league.

ITALY

Giorgos Kyriakopoulos (Sassuolo/Serie A): Played the full 90 minutes for Sassuolo in a narrow 2-1 home loss to Napoli.

SCOTLAND

Marios Ogboe (Hamilton/Scottish Premiership): Did not play any part in a 2-1 victory against Hearts at home.

TURKEY

Stelios Kitsiou (Ankaragucu/Turkish Super Lig): The Greek, in great form, notched a last-gasp equaliser for his club in a dramatic 2-2 draw against Antalyaspor.

Dimitris Chatziisaias (Rizespor/Turkish Super Lig): In the Turkish Cup, the centre-back played 90 minutes of a 1-1 draw with Samsunspor and received a yellow card, before he then sat on the bench during a 2-0 victory at Yeni Malatyaspor in the Super Lig.

Andreas Tatos (Altay/Turkish First League): Played 90 minutes against Trabzonspor in the Cup, dishing out an assist for his team’s goal in the 4-1 defeat. Sat on the bench in a 3-1 league triumph over Erzurum. 

POLAND

Michalis Manias (Pogon Szczecin/Ekstraklasa): Played the entire 90 minutes of a 1-0 home defeat to Korona.

Konstantinos Triantafyllopoulos (Pogon Szczecin/Ekstraklasa): Just like his fellow Greek, he also stayed on the pitch for the entirety of the match against Korona, picking up a booking for his troubles.

ROMANIA

Aris Soiledis (FCSB/Liga 1): Had to be substituted in the 12th minute of a 2-0 victory against Universitatea Craiova in Bucharest.

Athanasios Papazoglou (FC Voluntari/Liga 1): Given the entire 90 minutes on the pitch as his club were crushed 4-0 by reigning champions and UEFA Europa League participants, CFR Cluj.

Okan Chatziterzoglou (Academica Clinceni/Liga 1): Remained on the bench in a 3-1 loss to Astra on the road.

Minas Chalkiadakis (FC Botosani/Liga 1): Did not compete in the 1-0 home victory against Dinamo Bucuresti.
