The Greeks got off to a solid start, holding a 2-1 lead after the first period play. Italy then responded in the second period, by going up 4-3 themselves before the score was ultimately tied at 4-4 going into the halftime break.

The Italians then completely dominated the second half, and the Greeks had no answers. Italy led 7-5 after three periods, and then won by 10-6 in the end.

Six different players scored Greece’s six goals, as Stylianos Argyropoulos, Ioannis Fountoulis, Konstantinos Genidounias, Alexandros Gounas, Marios Kapotsis, and Konstantinos Mourikis each got on the scoresheet.

Greece will now face Georgia on Thursday in their second match in Group D. Georgia, who are making their European Championships debut here, earned a surprise 9-7 victory over France today.
