Coming into the match, Sakkari led the head-to-head 2-1 over the Czech. Sakkari was looking to become the first Greek woman to ever reach the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam in singles. The Greek went up an early break in the first set, but wasted two opportunities to serve for the set (at 5-4 and 6-5). The set was then decided by a tiebreaker, which the Greek won 7-4 to take the first set.
However, Kvitova responded by winning the second set 6-3 to force a third set. The Czech was then able to carry this momentum into the third set, which she won 6-2 to book her spot in the quarterfinals.
Kvitova, last year’s runner-up, will now face either world number one Ashleigh Barty of Australia, or world number 19 Alison Riske of the United States, in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
