Argentine midfielder Facundo Bertoglio scored the only goal of the game seven minutes into the second half to settle what was another tight contest between these two teams at the Lamia Municipal Stadium.

Panathinaikos will be disappointed with the result in a match which they squandered some good chances to score, but they remain unmoved in fifth spot in the table, six points adrift of Atromitos in fourth.

The win helps struggling Lamia move five points clear of the relegation zone in 14th place, and sets up an enticing third encounter between the two teams at Panathinaikos’ Apostolos Nikolaidis’ home on Thursday night.

THE MATCH

Panathinaikos came into the match seeking revenge for their 1-0 defeat to Lamia at the same venue in their recent Greek Cup Round of 16, first leg match, but there was little to choose between the two teams in a close first-half.

The home side began on the front foot, winning five corners in the first quarter of an hour, while Panathinaikos were unlucky not to open the scoring when Federico Macheda fired narrowly over the crossbar in the 29th minute.

Lamia responded with a good chance of their own five minutes before half-time, but Bertoglio’s long range effort fizzed inches past the post.

The teams went into the dressing rooms at 0-0 at half-time, but after a strong start to the second half from the home side, the deadlock was finally broken in the 52nd minute, courtesy of Lamia’s Argentine duo.

It wa the impressive Bertoglio on target, the 28-year-old volleying home in emphatic fashion from countryman Jerónimo Barrales’ headed pass.

Panathinaikos responded well, but their finishing was wayward with Mattias Johansson and Macheda both missing good chances to equalize in the space of a minute just after the hour mark.

A flurry of substitutions disrupted the flow of the game as it entered its final stages, and Panathinaikos struggled to create any further, notable openings as the home side clung on for another famous victory.
