Lavrio’s strong start to the Greek Basket League reached a new high on Saturday thanks to massive win over Promitheas, while Trikala’s luck remains rotten following yet another loss.

Round 12 in the Basket League tipped-off with three early starts on Saturday, including Trikala’s trip to Kolossos. Finding themselves in the thick of a relegation battle, Trikala already went through a turbulent week following the resignation of Kostas Mexas as Trikala boss and appointment of Fotis Takianos as his replacement. The coaching change didn’t make much difference, however, as Trikala stumbled to their eighth straight loss in a 78-60 defeat against Kolossos. A brutal second quarter in which Trikala were only able to must six points, ultimately sealed the fate of the Sakafiliades despite a 17-point effort from Michalis Lountzis. Dustin Ware and Marvin Jones both notched 14 points as Kolossos climbed back into a play-off spot with the win.

As Trikala’s struggles continue, Kymis have dramatically turned around their season and have climbed into a play-off spot with Saturday’s 73-59 win over Koroivos. Quenton DeCosey struck for a double-double with 13 points and 16 rebounds, but that didn’t stop Kymis from rolling to their fifth win in six games. Sotiris Manolopoulos led Kymis scorers with 16 points, while Gary McGhee notched a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

In Thessaloniki, PAOK continued their momentum following last week’s defeat of Olympiacos and midweek success in the FIBA Basketball Champions League with a 92-74 win over Panionios. Linos Chrysikopoulos led PAOK with 21 points on the night as PAOK used a 35-point second quarter to hand Panionios their eleventh loss of the season. Slaven Cupkovic led Panionios scorers in the defeat with 20 points as the Panthers remain at foot of the table for yet another week.

In the late start on Saturday, Lavrio continued their good form with an impressive 101-87 defeat of fellow surprise package, Promitheas. The win sees Lavrio assume sole-possession of second place in the league standings, with the Metallorichoi now unbeaten in their last three outings. McKenzie Moore led scoring for Lavrio with 20 points as his side rallied from a first quarter deficit. A 21-point night from Langston Hall and a double-double from Nikos Gikas wasn’t enough as Promitheas suffered their fourth loss in their last five games.

The Round 12 fixture list concludes on Sunday with three fixtures tipping-off with Aris’ trip to Crete to take on Rethymno. The Athenian Derby featuring AEK and Panathinaikos at OAKA is the must-see fixture of the day, while Olympiacos host Gymnastikos in the final fixture of the round.
