During Tuesday’s EPO Board of Directors meeting, many decisions were made regarding the new season and the new Greek football structure.

New Greek football structure approved

The EPO voted to pass the restructuring of the Greek football pyramid where three professional categories will be formed including the Super League (first tier), Super League 2 (second tier), and the Football League (third tier). This decision came as no surprise after Deputy Minister of Sport, Georgios Vasiliadis, did not back down from his proposal, despite the backlash he received from various clubs and organizations. Vasiliadis’ stance was made official on Monday and on Tuesday, the EPO passed the new format. All that remains is for the amendment to be passed into legislation by the Greek parliament, which will not pose any barriers.

Football League to organize the Super League 2

During Tuesday’s EPO Board of Directors meeting, it was voted that the Football League will organize and head the newly formed Super League 2. The proposal passed with a 13:4 vote. The new Greek second division will mostly compose of teams that currently compete in the Football League and as a result, it was deemed that the Football League should oversee the Super League 2. This is until the Super League 2 can establish autonomy, statutes, offices, employes, etc.

Dates announced for Promotion/Relegation Playoff

The promotion/relegation playoff between the Super League’s 13th placed team and the Football League’s second placed team will take place two weeks after the conclusion of the league season. The first leg will be held on May 15th and the second leg four days later on May 19th. The draw to determine the hosts for the first leg will be held on May 7th.

The winner of the two-legged playoff will play in the 2019/20 Super League while the loser will compete in the 2019/20 Super League 2 (second tier).

Dates announced for 2019 summer and 2020 winter transfer periods

The EPO also confirmed the dates for the 2019 summer and 2020 winter transfer periods. Players that are contracted with a team can transfer elsewhere from July 1st through August 31st in the summer transfer window while transfers in the winter will be eligible from January 1-31.
