Tsitsipas, who was previously 0-5 against the Russian, came into the match hoping to change that head-to-head record. Despite being unable to convert his only break point in the first set, Tsitsipas was able to win all of his service games without facing a break point to send the set to a tiebreak. There, the 21-year-old from Athens prevailed 7-5 to take the opening set.

In the second set, Tsitsipas held two break points at 3-3, but failed to convert them. Nevertheless, he was ultimately able to secure a break to go up 5-4, and then closed out the set on serve in the subsequent game to take the match 7-6(5) 6-4. The Greek was great on serve throughout the match, not hitting any double faults and not facing a single break point.

Tsitsipas will return to action on Wednesday to play his second match in Group Agassi, against either world number one Rafael Nadal of Spain, or defending champion Alexander Zverev of Germany. The top two players in the group will then advance to the semifinals.
