Messy situation concerning broadcasting contracts

The 2019/2020 Super League season is set to begin on Saturday, with the problem concerning broadcasting contracts still very much present.

For the second consecutive season, clubs have been allowed to secure individual broadcasting contracts with a company of their choice, rather than the Super League having a deal of its own with one organisation.

As it stands, AEK, AEL, Asteras Tripolis, Olympiacos, Panathinaikos, Panionios and Volos NFC all have contracts with Nova for the 2019/2020 season, but PAOK have been unable to strike an agreement with the television company. Instead, the reigning Greek champions will exclusively broadcast their home match against Panetolikos on PAOK TV (pay-per-view). It’s not yet known if PAOK will be able to reach a compromise with either Nova or ERT for future games.

It has also been suggested that either Aris or Lamia might switch from ERT to Nova for the 2019/2020 Super League. Initially, reports stated that ERT threatened to not broadcast any matches this weekend, but the state broadcasting company will still film games as normal.

At the moment, OFI remain the only Super League club without a broadcasting contract for the season, but Nova is the favourite to eventually secure a deal with the Cretan side. The fact that OFI will play their first two matches on the road has given them extra time to negotiate.

State of play concerning Super League broadcasting contracts as it stands:

Nova: AEK, AEL, Asteras Tripolis, Olympiacos, Panathinaikos, Panionios, Volos NFC.

ERT: Aris (linked with Nova move), Atromitos, Lamia (linked with Nova move), Panetolikos, Xanthi.

Independent: PAOK.

No contract: OFI.

A decision is also yet to be taken for the broadcasting rights of the Super League 2.
