Mitroglou to leave PSV after forgettable stay

It was certainly a forgettable stay for Konstantinos Mitroglou at PSV Eindhoven, only scoring three goals for the Dutch side in 18 appearances.

It’s fair to say that his best days are firmly in the past. Over the course of the last few seasons, Mitroglou has struggled to gain any kind of momentum, failing to impress with Marseille, Galatasaray and PSV. Following a disappointing loan spell at Galatasaray, the Marseille management was hoping for Mitroglou to get back on track in the Netherlands as a loanee with PSV, but the exact opposite happened. Mitroglou registered three goals for PSV in all tournaments, only spending a grand total of 348 minutes on the pitch. It goes without saying that Mitroglou won’t be staying in Eindhoven.

The 2019/2020 Eredivisie campaign was recently cancelled as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Initially, Mitroglou made a positive start to life at PSV, scoring in a UEFA Europa League qualifier against Apollon Limassol and finding the net in the opening round of the Eredivisie season. Unfortunately, though, it proved to be false hope as he subsequently only tallied one more marker during the entire campaign. Mitroglou was solely used as an impact substitute by the PSV coaching staff.

Reports have consistently been linking Mitroglou with a possible move to Olympiacos. According to Sport FM, Olympiacos will consider signing Mitroglou as a free agent assuming he terminates his contract with Marseille, but the Erythrolefki only want to secure his signature if either Youssef El Arabi or Ahmed Hassan leave. Mitroglou is likely to remain at Marseille in the event that his deal with the organisation isn’t terminated.

Mitroglou’s contract with Marseille is due to expire in the summer of 2021.

Furthermore, Mitroglou doesn’t seem to have any future with the Greek national team, with John van ‘t Schip encouraging fans to focus instead on young prospects such as Vangelis Pavlidis: “In the Netherlands, there is a young Greek striker who has been scoring goals in the Eredivisie and is the future of the national team. Vangelis Pavlidis has improved greatly, so it would be better to speak about him. In recent years, Kostas Mitroglou has not done so well, he has barely played in the past season. We can’t look back in the past.”

The ageing 32-year-old striker scored 17 goals in 65 games with the senior national team.
