Modern day gladiators keep betting industry alive in Covid-19 era
The world as we know it has endured major changes. No one can deny that. Covid-19 has disrupted modern life as we know it in all its aspects. Stores have closed down, the general public have been made to endure a time in quarantine, sporting events have been cancelled or postponed. Even the Olympics who were programmed to take place in 3 months time have been postponed until 2021, disrupting their four year cycle.

Stores have closed down, the general public have been made to endure a time in quarantine, sporting events have been cancelled or postponed. Apart from the social and economical consequences who have yet to be largely revealed, the sports industry has endured a major blow. For a substantial amount of time no sporting event was allowed to take place, thus ‘shutting down’ a multi-billion dollar industry. The blow has also taken its toll on the betting industry, as options are now limited. With no sports action, the only option for betting or other gambling activities would be mostly online casinos or placing one’s stakes on events from lower profile leagues whose action was not stopped due to covid-19.
However, despite the crisis, the UFC proceeded with the announcement of three MMA events in one week, from May 10 to May 17, ensuring that all precautionary measures were taken. With no other live action present, professional gamblers, betting enthusiasts, even average fans grabbed the chance to make some extra cash while watching modern day gladiators clash in the octagon.
Betting in Mixed Martial Arts events is not as easy as it sounds, as the octagon is full of surprises. It is not rare for a fan favorite to end up on the wrong end of the judges’ score cards or even worse, being caught by a lucky blow and getting KO’ed by a seemingly lesser opponent.
