Multiple surprises in third round of Greek Cup
The third round of the Greek Cup housed multiple surprises as Platanias, Doxa Dramas, Karaiskakis, Aiginiakos, and Sparti all bowed out after falling over the weekend.

The third round of the Greek Cup took place over the weekend with teams from Greece’s second division, the Football League, entering the action. Thirty two teams from the Football League and Gamma Ethniki took part in the third round of the Greek Cup in single legged knockout matches with the 16 winners advancing to the 32-team group stages. The other 16 teams that will take place in the group stages are the 16 clubs in the Greek SuperLeague.
Over the weekend there were some surprises with Aris Avato taking down last year’s SuperLeague participants, Platanias, in a penalty shoot out. The match ended in a 1:1 draw in regulation and after a goalless extra time period, Aris Avatou prevailed 5:4 in the shootout. Aiginiakos also boweed out of the competition in penalties, losing to Apollon Paralimniou 5:4 in the shootout, after a goalless draw.
Niki Volou knocked out the Football League’s Doxa Dramas with a 1:0 scoreline while Sparti and Karaiskakis, who compete in Greece’s second tier, were also upset with the same scoreline by Thyella Kamari and Ierapetra, respectively.
In the highlight fixture of the round, Iraklis prevailed in penalties over Ethnikis Piraeus. The Piraeus club played with 10-men for a majority of the match (red in the 39th minute), however Iraklis were unable to use the man advantage as the match ended in a goalless draw in both regulation and extra time. In a long, drawn out penalty shootout, it was the Thessalonikis who prevailed with a 10:9 victory.
In the other fixtures, the Football League sides all booked their ticket to the group stages of the Greek cup. Below are all the results from the third round of the Greek Cup.
