For the first time in nine years, two Greek teams will compete in the Final Four of the LEN Euro League, Europe’s premier club competition for women’s water polo. Olympiacos comfortably defeated Spain’s CN Sant Andreu over two legs in the quarterfinal stage while Vouliagmeni came from behind in the second leg to surpass Russia’s Kinef Kirishi.
The last time two Greek teams progressed in the Final Four of the competition, Vouliagmeni were crowned champions of Europe after defeating Kinef Kirishi (RUS) 10:7 in the final on the island of Kerkyra. Olympiacos, who lost to Kinef Kirishi 11:12 in the semifinals, claimed fourth place (lost to Orizzonte Catania 12:13 in the third place match).
On Wednesday, the Final Four draw paired the two Greek clubs in the semifinals in what is expected to be a much heated “Greek” fixture. The semifinals will take place Friday, April 19th with the final scheduled one day later on Saturday, April 20th. The other semi-final pairing will consist of Italy’s Plebiscito Padova and four-time champions Sabadell of Spain. Sabadell will play host to the semifinal and final matches.
Vouliagmeni have won this competition on two occasions (2009, 2010) while Olympiacos have claimed the European title once in 2015. Glyfada have also been crowned champions twice, in 2000 and three years later in 2003.
