Olympiacos got back to winning ways in the EuroLeague regular season at the Peace and Friendship Stadium, defeating Bayern Munich 89-72 in Piraeus.

Until the fourth quarter, the game was finely balanced, but Olympiacos soon killed any Bayern hopes of an upset as the Greeks won the concluding frame by 16 points with an impressive attacking performance. 

As a result of this victory, Giorgos Bartzokas’ troops now sit in 12th place of the EuroLeague standings with a 8-12 record, as their playoff push continues. Bayern, however, are last with only six wins in 20 matches.

Sasha Vezenkov starred for Olympiacos with 20 points, while Taylor Rochestie dished out 12 assists. Augustine Rubit (14), Giorgos Printezis (10), Antonis Koniaris (10), Brandon Paul (10) and Wade Baldwin (10) also reached double figures in terms of points.

Next week, Olympiacos will face Zenit in Saint Petersburg, while Bayern host Maccabi Tel Aviv.

THE MATCH

In an evenly matched first period, Bayern kept pace with Olympiacos, only trailing by a mere three points when it finished.

During the second quarter, the game followed much the same pattern, with Olympiacos failing to create a large advantage over their German opponents.

Bayern subsequently cut the deficit to just the one point as they claimed the third quarter 21-17.

Olympiacos, sensing danger, produced a powerful display in the fourth quarter. All of a sudden, their attack fully clicked into gear, scoring a huge 35 points to secure a vital victory which keeps their playoff hopes alive.
