Michael Ortega, Jordi Gomez, and Eric Bautheac scored for Omonoia, and for the first time all season, they have first place to themselves, now leading Anorthosis by one point. Salamina remain in eighth place.

THE MATCH

The sides traded chances early on. Matt Derbyshire received a pass following a corner and buzzed the crossbar, and at the other end, Alastair Reynolds found himself in space, but he missed the far post.

Instead, Omonoia opened the scoring in the 23rd minute. Michael Ortega dribbled through the box, somehow stayed on his feet after taking an elbow from Ioannis Kosti, and then he beat Robert Veselovsky from a bad angle. The Colombian’s perseverance gave Omonoia a 1-0 lead.

Omonoia doubled their lead in the 34th minute. Benjamin Lambot made a back pass to Veselovsky, and he misplayed it. Jordi Gomez had all day to pick his spot on Veselovsky, and sure enough, he beat him with an excellent, low finish, making it 2-0 for Omonoia. The Omonoia attack remained relentless, but their halftime lead stayed at 2-0.

Salamina were a little better in the second half. Tonia Tisdell forced a save from Fabiano. Then Jose San Roman fed Theodosis Siathas, but he couldn’t keep it down.

Instead, Omonoia put the game away in the 72nd minute. Eric Bautheac took a pass from Gomez, and he slotted it past Veselovsky to make it 3-0 for Omonoia.

Veselovsky got hurt shortly after that and had to be replaced in goal by Tasos Kissas. Kissas had to quickly face a breakaway with Miku bearing down on him, Miku went for the chip, and it narrowly went over the net. Siathas tried to break up the clean sheet, and nearly did so with a stunning strike that did not miss by much. Had it been on target, Fabiano still might have stopped it, as he reacted well. Nonetheless, Omonoia got what they came for, a 3-0 win over Salamina.
