Panathinaikos have announced the launch of the Pavlos Giannakopoulos Tournament, which will debut with its inaugural edition this coming September.

Giannakopoulos, who along with his brother Kostas, co-owned Panathinaikos from 1987-2012, passed away last month at the age of 89.

Pavlos’ son, Dimitris, was voted Panathinaikos president just two days prior to his father’s death and remains keen to continue his father’s legacy which remains eternally linked with the club.

Panathinaikos announced that the first edition of the newly-established tournament will feature the likes of Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv, Fenerbahce, and Khimki Moscow Region.

The two-day event is scheduled to take place at the OAKA Olympic Indoor Hall starting on 27 September.

Panathinaikos end Superfoods sponsorship

Meanwhile, in an unrelated announcement, Panathinaikos announced that the club have opted to terminate their sponsorship with Superfoods – a natural health products company that is also partially owned by the Giannakopoulos family.

Superfoods became Panathinaikos’ title sponsor in 2016, shortly after the company was acquired in a joint venture between the Giannakopoulos and Papazoglou Groups.

Panathinaikos haven’t hinted if they are in seek of a new sponsorship deal, though it remains unlikely that the club will agree to add a sponsor to its name as it heads towards it centennial season.
