Despite the various off the field issues that surround the club, Panathinaikos have had a great season to date. Heading into the 2018/19 season, the bookmakers had Panathinaikos fourth favorites to suffer relegation as they began the season with a six point deficit, after failing to obtain a license to compete in the league. The Trifylli were then docked a further three points for fan violence during last month’s derby against arch rivals Olympiacos.

These developments bring Panathinaikos’ total point deductions to nine (!) for the 2018/19 season. As a result, Panathinaikos sit in sixth place with 35 points, eight points behind fifth placed Aris with three games remaining. Over the weekend, Panathinaikos took down Aris 2:0 at the OAKA stadium in what was a clear statement from the young Greens.

Taking into account the points Panathinaikos have earned on the field, 44 points, the club would sit in fourth place for the 2018/19 Super League season, one point ahead of Aris. Under normal circumstances, this would have led to a place in Europe for the 2019/20 season, however the club is currently serving a UEFA ban due to recent financial troubles. If Panathinaikos did claim a top-five finish this season, the UEFA ban would have been served next season (2019/20) and the Trifylli could contest a place in Europe for the 2020/21 season based on their 2019/20 Super League finish. Unfortunately for the Athenian club, this is not the case and if they manage a top four (or five) finish next season, they will serve their UEFA ban in the 2020/21 season, which marks the final year of their 3-year UEFA ban.
