Panathinaikos suffered their first defeat of the EuroLeague season as Bayern Munich managed a come-from-behind 80-79 win over the Greek Champions at the Audi Dome in Munich.

Having made their return to EuroLeague basketball just last week, Bayern reached the win column for the first time this season on the back of a 19-point effort from Nihad Dedovic.

Danilo Barthel tallied 12 points for Bayern while Petteri Koponen, who was linked with a move to Panathinaikos before joining Bayern in the offseason, added 10 points for the Bavarians.

Panathinaikos, who were led by Keith Langford’s 18-point effort, had the chance to steal a win at the death but a costly turnover by James Gist sealed the result in Bayern’s favour. Bayern’s Vladimir Lucic, who had put Bayern ahead just moments earlier, stripped Gist of possession after two free throw misses from teammate Devin Booker.

In what was a tight contest from start to finish, a stagnant Panathinaikos offense failed to keep up with Bayern’s pace of scoring as the Trifylli faded in the final frame to slip to 1-1 on the season.

Konstantinos Mitoglou finished as Panathinaikos’ only other player besides Langford to notch double figures thanks to his 10-point effort, while playmaker Nick Calathes managed 9 points and 8 assists in the defeat.

Panathinaikos, who beat Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv in their home opener last week, will return to Athens to host EuroLeague debutants Herbalife Gran Canaria at the OAKA Olympic Indoor Hall on Thursday.
