PAOK’s financial struggles on the basketball side are a well-known fact in Greece. Unlike their footballing counterparts, the basketball side of the historic club is struggling to keep afloat amid a financial crisis at the club.

It’s a difficult situation for PAOK’s basketball operations as the club look to field a competitive team in the Basket League and abroad while also trying to settle past debts with former players.

It’s not uncommon for PAOK’s football players to be seen at the PAOK Sports Arena to support their basketball colleagues in the Basket League or even the Basketball Champions League, but what the football players are doing to help relive the burden on the basketball club is something special.

Players of PAOK’s football operations have agreed to donate their bonus winnings from performances in the Super League to the basketball club. PAOK players are said to receive a bonus for each victory that manages to keep the club in first place in the Super League standings.

The effort is reportedly led by PAOK captain Adelinho Vieirinha who has been seen courtside at the PAOK Sports Arena on many occasions since returning to Greece in 2017.

SAVVIDIS INSPIRED BY PLAYERS

The generosity of PAOK’s players has rubbed-off on PAOK owner Ivan Savvidis as the president of the football club is also stepping-up to help the basketball club. Savvidis has confirmed that he will match the bonus donated by the players with a direct contribution to the basketball club.

PAOK currently sit in a two-way tie with Olympiacos atop the Super League table with both sides set to faceoff in Piraeus on Sunday.
