Coming on as head coach of PAOK after the club’s unbeaten and double-winning season, expectations were always high for Portuguese manager Abel Ferreira to replicate the results of former manager Razvan Lucescu.

Last season, the Romanian boss was hugely successful in the league derbies, where he managed six wins, two draws, and zero losses from eight matches. Lucescu’s side only dropped four points in derbies last season, a crucial statistic in the club’s record-breaking season.

Their two most important derby wins came against Olympiacos, where the Thessalonikis picked up six points from their main title challengers to secure the league crown. Only AEK and Aris managed to take points away from PAOK, including a 1:1 away draw at the OAKA versus AEK and a 1:1 draw at the Toumba against rivals Aris. PAOK scored 14 goals and only conceded four in last season’s derbies.

Abel Ferreira has found the transition much more difficult than Lucescu, with PAOK’s performances in derbies this season being poor. PAOK have only claimed one win from eight Super League derbies in the regular season, a 1:0 victory over AEK thanks to a successful spot-kick by Andre Vieirinha.

Ferreira’s record in derbies this campaign is one win, four draws, and three losses. This amounts to 17 dropped points in derbies, a drastic difference from PAOK’s title-winning season. The team has scored ten goals in derbies, however, they have conceded 14 goals.

The concern for PAOK heading into the playoffs will be how they look to address this horrid record within derbies as the playoffs will be a mini-league full of these fixtures. PAOK currently sit in second place, seven points behind leaders Olympiacos and eight points ahead of third-placed AEK.

Lucescu’s derby record 2018/19 (6-2-0):

PAOK - AEK 2:0

Olympiacos - PAOK 0:1

Aris - PAOK 1:2

PAOK - Panathinaikos 2:0

AEK - PAOK 1:1

PAOK - Olympiacos 3:1

PAOK - Aris 1:1

Panathinaikos - PAOK 0:2

Ferreira’s derby record 2019/20 (1-4-3):

PAOK - Aris 2:2

AEK - PAOK 2:2

PAOK - Panathinaikos 2:2

Olympiacos - PAOK 1:1

Aris - PAOK 4:2

PAOK - AEK 1:0

Panathinaikos - PAOK 2:0

PAOK - Olympiacos 0:1

PAOK did defeat Olympiacos 3-2 in the first leg of the Greek Cup semi-finals. The statistics above only factor derbies in the Greek Super League and not in the Cup.
