Having been relegated from the German Bundesliga with Hamburg, 26-year old Papadopoulos was rumoured to be searching for a new club, however those hopes have now been dashed. According to the Hamburger Morgenpost media outlet, Papadopoulos has received serious knee cartilage damage which requires immediate surgery and will rule him out of action until at least January 2019.

On top of missing the start of the Bundesliga-2, the commanding centre-back will not be able to participate in Greece’s UEFA Nations League campaign in Group 2 against Estonia, Finland and Hungary.

During the 2017/2018 Bundesliga campaign, Papadopoulos scored one goal in 29 fixtures, but he wasn’t able to save Hamburg from relegation. He has made 29 appearances for the senior Greek national team.
