On Thursday evening, Panathinaikos suffered a disappointing 105-106 defeat in double overtime against Alba Berlin in EuroLeague regular-season action. The loss saw Panathinaikos drop out of the top-eight (playoff position) with a 4-4 record and also resulted in the sacking of coach Argyris Pedoulakis.
The only positive takeaway from Thursday night’s clash was the incredible performance from Ioannis Papapetrou. The Greek international dropped a record-breaking 39 points, the most ever by a Panathinaikos player in the EuroLeague. Papapetrou surpassed Jaka Lakovic’s record of 36 points in a EuroLeague game against Benetton Basket in the 2003-04 season.
The 26-year-old was just two points shy of tieing the all-time EuroLeague record for points by a single player in a game (41), which is held by four players: Bobby Brown (Montepaschi Siena), Kaspars Kambala (Efes Pilsen), Carlton Myers (Fortitudo Bologna), and Alphonso Ford who played at Peristeri at the time. Before Thursday, Papapetrou’s career-high points total in the EuroLeague was 18.
Papapetrou went 3/4 from the free-throw line, 9/10 from two-point attempts, and 6/12 from behind the arch. He also recorded five rebounds, three assists, two steals, and one block.
