As expected, Nikki Papavasiliou is the new man in charge at Panionios. The club released an official statement on Tuesday:

“FC Panionios GSS announces the appointment of coach Nikodimos Papavasiliou. Mr. Papavasiliou will meet the players for the first time during training on Tuesday at the Nea Smyrni stadium.

Mr. Papavasiliou began his coaching carer in Cyprus with APEP Pitsilias and followed with positions at Olympiacos Nicosia, Doxa Katokopias, Enosis Neon Paralimni, Apollon Limassol, and Ermis Aradippou. In Greece, he has worked with OFI, where he also performed as a player and Ergotelis.

During the 2015/16 campaign, he was the manager of Slovan Bratislava, where he helped the team to a second-place finish in the Slovakian League. He also led the club to the Slovakian Cup final and earned his team a place in the UEFA Europa League.

He currently holds a UEFA Pro coaching license.

As a player, Nikodimos Papavasiliou was the first Cypriot that played in the Premier League. Specifically, during the 1993/94 season, he joined Newcastle under the coaching of Kevin Keegan. Previously, he played with the youth teams of Oldham and Arsenal.”

Papavasiliou will take over Akis Mantzios’ post, who was sacked by the club on Monday. The Cypriot boss will have a tough task at hand as the Nea Smyrni club sit bottom of the Super League table with -6 points and two losses from their opening two games. Panionios failed to acquire a license to participate in the league and were forced to start the season with negative six points.
