In September 2019, Papavasiliou became the head coach of Panionios, who had already started the Super League campaign with a six-point deficit as a result of failing to qualify for a licence. At times, Panionios have shown flashes of promise, but they remain bottom of the table with a mere 10 points on the board.

Panionios have only won one of their last 12 league games.

Cypriot manager Papavasiliou, 49, has reportedly decided to leave Panionios in favour of Wadi Degla in Egypt.

Recently, Greek coach Takis Gonias left Wadi Degla, with the Egyptians subsequently deciding to sign Papavasiliou as a replacement.

Traianos Dellas had been linked with the Wadi Degla vacancy.

Dimitris Koropoulis will reportedly manage Panionios in their upcoming game against fellow strugglers Panetolikos at the weekend.

Nikos Papadopoulos is a candidate to replace Papavasiliou in Nea Smyrni.

Overall, Papavasiliou was on the Panionios bench for a grand total of 26 matches, registering six victories, six draws, 14 defeats and a points per game average of 0.92.
