On Sunday, PAS Giannina were mathematically relegated to the Greek second division for the first time in eight years after a 0:2 loss to champions PAOK. The Ajax of Epirus claimed 14th place in this year’s Super League standings ahead of fellow relegated sides Levadiakos and Apollon Smyrnis.

Club owner Giorgos Christovasilis announced after Sunday’s game that coach Giannis Petrakis will depart the club after a 5.5-year stint. Petrakis took over in February 2014 and led the club to successful campaigns during his time in charge, including qualification to the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League qualifying rounds. However, the 2018/19 season proved a troubling one for the Epirotes who talled 27 points with just seven wins, six draws, and 17 losses from 30 games.

Petrakis, who was the longest serving manager at one club in the Greek top flight, recorded 63 wins, 60 draws, and 73 defeates from 196 games with PAS Giannina.

Christovasilis also mentioned that he will move judicially against the restructuring of the championships in hopes of keeping PAS Giannina in the top flight. The champions of the Gamma Ethniki have also released a joint statement against the new Greek football leagues structure and it would not come as a surprise if other clubs do the same. The PAS Giannina officials will look to meet with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras regarding the matter when he pays Giannina a visit on Tuesday.

Lasty, Christovasilis mentioned that he is not opposed to selling the club if a satisfying offer comes in. However, he assured that he will not leave the club hanging and will do everything in his power for the Giannina’s quick return to the Super League.

Evripidis Giakos announced departure

Evripidis Giakos will continue his career elsewhere after announcing his departure from the club on Sunday. The striker has been on PAS Giannina’s books for 11 years with 161 appearances, eight goals, and three assists to his name. Giakos made the announcement on a facebook post.

Giakos has attracted interest from other Super League clubs and is expected to continue his career elsewhere in the top flight.
