Last season, Italian coach Gianluca Festa steered AEL to safety in the Super League, however he departed the Larissa organisation upon the conclusion of the campaign. Petric, 50, was hired as his replacement.

However, despite the 2019/2020 season having not even started yet, Petric has already suffered the sack.

On Wednesday, AEL travelled to Ioannina for a friendly match against PAS Giannina, claiming a 1:0 victory. Nevertheless, fiery AEL supremo Alexis Kougas was reportedly infuriated by the performance on the pitch, subsequently taking the immediate decision to fire Petric and his two assistants Andreas Lavradis and Aleksandar Jovic. Petric had initially signed a 1+1 contract with AEL.

AEL released a statement which revealed that the parties mutually decided to end their cooperation. According to AEL, Petric did not have any problems with terminating his contract, and he left Larissa on good terms with the administration.

The club then confirmed that Grigoriou has become the new AEL head coach:

“With only 15 days remaining before the start of the championship, AEL FC immediately proceeded with employing new coaches.

The head coach of AEL FC is Michalis Grigoriou.”

Grigoriou, 45, was most recently the boss of Panionios between July 2017 and June 2018. In the past, Grigoriou has also coached the likes of AOK Kerkyra, Atromitos, Doxa Drama and Panserraikos.
