Piempongsant’s Team Takes Shape

The next day at Panathinaikos is taking shape. The Pan Asia takeover is waiting to happen and in the background Pairoj Piempongsant has already begun putting the wheels in motion in relation to forming the group of men that hope to write a new, successful chapter in Panathinaikos’ illustrious history.

It has been known for some time that his son, Pete, will play a role in the club’s matters, as will former Chelsea boss Avram Grant. The Israeli will work with technical director Nikos Dabizas with the transfer dealings, in fact he is expected to oversee him in his role as CEO. Dabizas will conduct the negotiations but Grant will have the final say.

In terms of the new look Board and those in administrative positions, Piempongsant has turned to powerful men to guide him in the right direction. He knows what he is looking for in terms of a President - he wants a businessman, rather than a football man. Someone who is strong-minded, a technocrat and preferably someone with banking experience to work in conjunction with the Board of Directors. This person will manage the club, oversee the finances and deal with any potential issues that may arise.

Nothing is official on this front yet, however, the name of Stavros Lekkakos has been mentioned several times in the last few days and he appears to be the favourite. His name is not the only one, as shipping tycoon Victor Restis has also been rumoured.

Sofoklis Pilavios is the frontrunner to be named as the new Vice President. Piempongsant wants the man in this position to have experience in the football world as the President will not. This can definitely be perceived as a clever move as the President will possess the business acumen and the Vice President will bring the football “know how”. Pilavios fits the bill as he has previously spent time at Panathinaikos and has also worked at the EPO. In addition to this, he has never concealed his love for the Trifylli. His love for the club is another thing that draws Piempongsant to him.

The Thai businessman is tipped to be in Greece again within the next few days to begin the begin the process of the aforementioned appointments. The takeover is expected to happen after the 21st of September, when the latest Board meeting takes place.
