On the site of the demolished Nikos Goumas Stadium, the construction of the Agia Sofia Stadium is continuing, with impressive progress having been witnessed. At the moment, stands to the south of the stadium are being installed, and work will then begin on the roofing which covers spectator seats. AEK are set to move back to Nea Filadelfeia following the completion of the 2019/2020 season after spending a grand total of 16 years at the Olympic Stadium in Marousi.

The Agia Sofia Stadium, which could potentially host ether UEFA Euro 2028 or 2030 FIFA World Cup matches if the joint Greek, Bulgarian, Serbian and Romanian bid wins, will boast a capacity exceeding 30,000.

Over the weekend, AEK uploaded images of the pitch markings in front of the Gate 21 section which will hold members of the Original 21 fan movement. A handful of comments by supporters online have noted the large distance between spectator stands and the field of play:

AEK FC also released a VIDEO of the pitch markings on their official Instagram account.

A payment amounting to 20 million euros will be issued to AEK from the Region of Attica for the construction of the Agia Sofia Stadium. The money will be paid in three installments over the course of the next three years; three million (2019), 10 million (2020) and seven million (2021).

It’s also been confirmed that Intrakat - one of the leading construction companies in Greece - will undertake underground work which directly involves the operation of the Agia Sofia Stadium. The project will affect the Patriarchou Konstantinou Street in Nea Filadelfeia.
