As previously reported on AGONAsport, ESAKE and all 14 Basket League clubs officially recommended for the 2019/2020 season to be permanently stopped, with the campaign currently suspended as a result of the devastating coronavirus epidemic. Panathinaikos occupy first position of the table with 18 victories from 20 matches.

The Ministry of Sport is expected to formally approve of the decision to cancel the season.

However, the Players Union subsequently sent a letter to the ESAKE board requesting for players to receive 80% of their salaries if it is not possible to continue the season. Otherwise, if the wages aren’t played, the rest of the campaign must be played.

Eurohoops also revealed that members of the Players Union have expressed their annoyance that their views were not taken into consideration by the Basket League.

The Players Union has now suggested holding a conference call with all stakeholders which would help solve the matter.

Furthermore, assuming the 2019/2020 domestic season is over, there is the pressing matter of which teams are relegated and promoted. At the moment, PAOK and Aris are the last two teams in the Basket League standings, however they would protest the legitimacy of their relegation if they were to be demoted now with the season having not been completed. There is the option of not relegating the Thessaloniki pair, but then a decision will have to be made whether to promote any team from the second tier. There has been talk of 16 teams participating in the 2020/2021 Basket League season, with Olympiacos in contention for promotion. When the season was halted, Olympiacos ere in fifth place of the second division, however ESAKE wants the Erythrolefki to play in the Basket League again because of the potential financial gains.

More developments are expected in the coming weeks.
