APOEL are well in the hunt for third place in Group H after picking up another shock result against German giants Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday. The Cypriot champions grabbed an important point that sees them tied for third with Borussia Dortmund after four matches while Dortmund's hopes for a place in the knockout stages suffered a huge blow.
Borussia Dortmund dominated the opening 30 minutes and deservedly took the lead at the half hour mark with Guerreiro, who was brilliantly played through by Kagawa, to coolly put the ball into APOEL’s goal.
Despite Dortmund’s consistent pressure, the score remained 1-0 and APOEL struck five minutes after the restart to pull level. Aloneftis led the counterattack down the left flank and he sent a low ball into the left inside channel for Carlao on the byline.The defender sent an accurate cross to Pote, who turned inside the penalty area and hammered his strike past Burki.
With Dortmund needing all three points to stay in the hunt for second place in the group, the hosts increased their pressure as they looked to regain the lead. However, the stubborn APOEL defense held up to snag an important and historic point.
