Not only do Apollon boast a one-goal advantage to take into the return leg in Cyprus next week, they also have two vital away goals. In the 14th minute, Sasa Markovic converted a penalty he had won for Apollon, before Florian Klein answered just before halftime with a spot-kick of his own. However, early in the second half, but Serge Gakpe restored the Apollon advantage which the Cypriots wouldn’t sacrifice.

THE MATCH

Apollon quickly made themselves at home in the Austrian capital. In the box, Markovic drew a foul from Maudo Jarjue, and he confidently dispatched the ensuing penalty to give Apollon the dream start. Following that goal, the hosts notably increased the tempo, but they had trouble hitting the target.

After missing a chance to double Apollon’s lead, Diego Aguirre conceded a penalty, with Florian Klein subsequently beating Joel Mall to level the match in the 41st minute.

However, Apollon to regained the lead just five minutes into the second half, Giannis Gianniotas set up Serge Gakpe, who confidently beat the goalkeeper to notch Apollon’s second away goal. Alexander Grunwald looked to respond for Austria Vienna, but by pulling off a tricky save, Mall him.

Lucic then made a save on Adrian Sardinero at the other end.

In stoppage time, Lucic made another save on Gakpe, and shortly thereafter, Michael Madl saw his second yellow and got sent off. Apollon didn’t have time to capitalize on the extra man, but nonetheless, they can celebrate a famous win in the Austrian capital.
