Fountas is enjoying the season of his life. Since moving to Rapid Vienna in the summer of 2019, the promising forward has taken his game to the next level, scoring for fun and proving that he is capable of competing with consistency. Overall, the former AEK prospect has tallied 16 goals and four assists in 22 Austrian Bundesliga appearances, helping Rapid rise to second position of the table.

The gap between leaders RB Salzburg and Rapid currently stands at seven points.

No Greek striker has scored more goals than Fountas this season in domestic championships. With 16 markers on the board, Fountas is five goals ahead of Vangelis Pavlidis of Willem II in the Eredivisie, while Atromitos star Giorgos Manousos is a further two goals behind in the Super League.

As it stands, Fountas is in third place of the Bundesliga top scorers, trailing only Patson Daka (22 goals, RB Salzburg) and Shon Weissman (24 goals, Wolfsberger). Interestingly, the Greek forward is tied for 16 Bundesliga goals with Erling Braut Haaland, who transferred from Salzburg to Borussia Dortmund in the January transfer window.

Fountas has been unstoppable since the Bundesliga resumed. Last weekend, he dished out two assists and scored one goal in a thumping 4-0 triumph over Sturm Graz, before grabbing the winner against LASK Linz on the road on Wednesday:

Head coach of the senior Greek national team, John van ‘t Schip, is known to be keen to give Fountas a chance when international football eventually returns. Furthermore, it will be interesting to see if clubs from bigger leagues make enquiries about Fountas’ availability, with his value rated at 1.6 million euros by Transfermarkt. His existing contract with Rapid Vienna is due to expire in the summer of 2022.
