Promitheas put together a memorable 2018/19 season and have quickly made their presence known in both Greece and Europe. The Patra outfit finished fourth in the regular season of the Basket League and knocked out both PAOK and AEK in the playoffs to advance to the Finals for the first time in club history. Panathinaikos, however, ended their Cinderella run at the final hurdle with the Prasini sweeping the Finals series to claim the league title for a third straight season.

As Greece’s second placed team, Promitheas were granted a place in next year’s Basketball Champions League, however, the club has decided to withdraw from the Basketball Champions League and compete in next year’s EuroCup. Unlike the Champions League, which is organized by FIBA, the EuroCup is organized by the EuroLeague Basketball Company and serves as a second tier competition behind the EuroLeague itself.

Promitheas released an official announcement on Thursday confirming their participation in next year’s EuroCup.

“Promitheas Patras announces with great joy that in the new season, the team will compete in the 7DAYS EuroCup.

The club will make every effort to distinguish itself in this competition, while promoting Promitheas’ worth in all of Europe, with the goal to make our fans proud in Western Greece and the Peloponnese.”

Last season, Promitheas competed in the Basketball Champions League and qualified for the playoffs, where they were eliminated in the round of 16. The Patras club feel that they can make a good run in the EuroCup next season and possibly contest a place in the EuroLeague in the future. The winner of the EuroCup is granted an automatic spot in the following season’s EuroLeague competition.

Promitheas will be the first Greek team since the 2015/16 season to compete in the EuroCup. In that season, PAOK, AEK, and Aris partook in the EuroCup before choosing to abandon the competition the following season for the Champions League.

Promitheas’ place in the Basketball Champions League will be taken by PAOK, the next best team based on last year’s Basket League standings. PAOK were eliminated by Promitheas in the first round of the Basket League playoffs and claimed fifth place in the regular season standings.
