In excellent form across all competitions, Promitheas did fancy their chances against Panathinaikos at home, but their illustrious opponents were still the big favourites to progress. Panathinaikos had beaten Promitheas by 31 points in the Basket League last month.

Nevertheless, Promitheas deservedly shocked Panathinaikos in Patras, and a wonderful first-half performance was key. Promitheas outscored their Athenian visitors 47-35 in the opening two quarters.

Promitheas boasted a 15-point advantage early in the third quarter as they edged closer towards victory.

Panathinaikos, however, began to show their class as they embarked on a comeback. The Prasini eventually got back on level terms with two minutes remaining as Deshaun Thomas converted one of two free throws.

Nick Calathes then nailed a vital three-pointer in the 39th minute to once again draw Panathinaikos level.

Langston Hall converted a lay-up to score the decisive two points for Promitheas with 17 seconds left on the clock.

Wesley Johnson could have saved Panathinaikos with a last-gasp attempt from behind the arc, but he missed the target and the wild Promitheas celebrations could begin.

Diagoras Driopideon, AEK and Peristeri had all qualified for the semi-finals of the Greek Cup on Saturday.
