Yet another restructuring of the Super League appears to be around the corner. In accordance with the final 2019/2020 standings, Panionios are set to be relegated to the Super League 2, but there are two scenarios which would keep the historic Nea Smyrni-based organisation in the Super League.

Originally, Xanthi were due to play against the club in second place of the Super League 2 in a relegation/promotion playoff, but that match-up won’t happen after the second division was cancelled as a consequence of the coronavirus pandemic. PAS Giannina won the Super League 2 with Apollon Smyrnis occupying second position.

Let’s take a look at the four possible scenarios for restructuring the Super League for the 2020/2021 season:

  1. Panionios are relegated, PAS Giannina are promoted and 14 clubs participate in the 2020/2021 Super League.

  2. No one is relegated, PAS Giannina and Apollon Smyrnis are promoted, consequently meaning that 16 clubs participate in the 2020/2021 Super League.

  3. Panionios are relegated, PAS Giannina, Apollon Smyrnis and FC Chania are promoted, consequently meaning that 16 clubs participate in the 2020/2021 Super League.

  4. No one is relegated, PAS Giannina, Apollon Smyrnis, FC Chania and Levadiakos are promoted, consequently meaning that 18 clubs participate in the 2020/2021 Super League.

According to reports provided by gazzetta.gr, the first option is practically off the table, and it’s unlikely that the amount of teams participating in the Super League will increase to 18 after just 14 participated in the 2019/2020 campaign. However, whatever happens, Super League 2 winners PAS Giannina are sure to be promoted to the top flight after spending one season in the second tier.

The topic will be discussed during the Super League Board of Directors meeting on Monday.  The 2019/2020 standings will also be validated at the same time.
