Giannis Sfairopoulos has enjoyed a successful stint in Israel since taking over as head coach of Maccabi Tel Aviv in November 2018. Last season, he came close to leading Maccabi Tel Aviv back to the EuroLeague playoffs, but just missed out as his side finished in 10th place. He did, however, guide the Yellows to the domestic league title.

This season, Maccabi Tel Aviv have gotten off to a fantastic start to the season and currently occupy fourth place in the EuroLeague standings with a 9-4 record. The club’s administration is pleased with the work of Sfairopoulos since his appointment and is confident that he can lead Maccabi Tel Aviv back to one of Europe’s elite basketball clubs - Maccabi Tel Aviv have won the EuroLeague on six occasions with their most recent triumph coming in the 2014 season.

As a result, Sfairpoulos was rewarded with a new contract until 2023, with the Greek boss putting pen to paper to his new deal earlier this week.

After signing his new deal, Sfairopoulos said, “It is a big honor for me to continue coaching Maccabi Tel Aviv. It is a historic team, and I am happy that for the next three years, I will be the club’s head coach. It is one of the best moments of my career.”

He continued as he became emotional. “I love them, and they love me, and that is why I am staying here. I like the country, even though I have not traveled much out of Tel Aviv. Nonetheless, the country and its people are very friendly. Everyone has welcomed my family and me. We are all very happy.

For me, the most important piece is the recognition I receive from the fans. I am proud of the way we play. We are again a very strong team, as we were in the past.”

Giannis Sfairopoulos has also coached Apollon Kalamarias, PAOK, Kolossos Rodou, Panionios, and Olympiacos.
