AEK announced the transfer on Saturday afternoon after Simao had been spotted at Athens International Airport in the early hours:

“AEK FC announces the transfer of David Simao from Royal Antwerp FC of Belgium. The 29-year-old Portuguese midfielder has signed a three-year contract with our team and will wear the number 22.”

The Kitrinomavri have reportedly paid Royal Antwerp 400,000 euros to acquire Simao.

Simao, a versatile midfielder able to compete in a central role or on the left flank, progressed through the ranks at Benfica. Since then, Simao has played for Fatima, Paços de Ferreira, Académica, Marítimo, Arouca, CSKA Sofia, Boavista and Antwerp. In January, Simao transferred to Antwerp from Boavista, but he only played in four Jupiler League games.

The midfielder shared his emotions from joining AEK:

“I am very happy to be here and sign for AEK. This is a big step in my career. I thank the club and the coach for the faith which they have shown in me. I will give 100% on the pitch. I know Miguel Cardoso from when we competed against each other in Portugal, and I like the way he sets his teams up to play football. I think AEK have made a great choice in hiring him. Yes, it’s good that there are three Portuguese players in the team, but I will speak to everyone.”
