PLAYOFFS

Olympiacos can prepare to celebrate their 45th domestic title. Competing with assurance and confidence, the Erythrolefki had far too much class for AEK at the Olympic Stadium, earning a 2-1 victory thanks to first-half goals from Youssef El Arabi and Mohamed Camara. To their credit, AEK did improve in the second half and pulled one back through Sergio Araujo, but the hosts were made to pay for a shockingly poor opening 45 minutes. AEK were admittedly missing several key figures such as Andre Simoes, Nelson Oliveira and Petros Mantalos.

As it stands, Olympiacos can’t mathematically be caught in first, but that could change if PAOK win their legal case which is due to be decided in early July. PAOK were docked seven points for their involvement in a multi-ownership case with Xanthi.

In the Derby of Thessaloniki, PAOK proved too strong for an off-colour Aris, triumphing 2-0 at the Kleanthis Vikelidis Stadium with Fernando Varela and Karol Swiderski striking in the first half. As a result of their win and AEK’s loss, PAOK are now three points clear in second spot, with the two sides set to face each other in a crucial match in Thessaloniki on Wednesday. Aris occupy fifth position.

On Saturday, OFI and Panathinaikos played to a 0-0 draw in Heraklion, meaning their wait for their first playoff victory continues. At the moment, OFI are bottom of the playoff standings, while Panathinaikos are nine points ahead of Aris in fourth and nine behind AEK.

PLAYOUTS

Panionios are showing no signs of slowing. Desperate to protect their top-flight status, the in-form Panthers registered another vital victory in the playouts on Saturday, seeing off Xanthi 2-1 in Nea Smyrni to pull to within one point of their opponents. A day later, Panetolikos were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Asteras Tripolis, meaning the Agrinio-based organisation is only one point above Panionios as the fascinating fight for survival continues. Asteras are second in the playouts with 36 points.

In the week’s concluding games, Atromitos moved into first position of the playouts with a confident 3-0 victory over AE Larissa, while Volos NFC and Lamia played to a drab 0-0 draw. Volos trail Lamia by one point in mid-table.

Player of the Week: Mohamed Camara (Olympiacos)

The 23-year-old Guinean midfielder is in inspired form. Once again, Camara took a leading role for Olympiacos this weekend, scoring his fourth goal of the playoffs to secure a 2-1 triumph over AEK at the OAKA. Camara has now grabbed two goals against AEK in the 2019/2020 Super League campaign so far.

Goal of the Week: Athanasios Androutsos (Atromitos)

Androutsos completed Atromitos’ routine victory against AEL in wonderful fashion. After receiving the ball on the left flank, the 23-year-old midfielder decided to try his luck, curling a fantastic shot beyond the goalkeeper and into the right corner. Androutsos has tallied four goals this season for the Peristeri club.
