SLGR Standings: PAOK in control, Atromitos move into third

Super League leaders PAOK protected their seven-point lead over Olympiacos with an important victory at the Olympic Stadium against Panathinaikos, while Atromitos overtook AEK into third after the reigning champions suffered a disappointing defeat on the road against Europe chasing Aris.

In Athens, PAOK continued their march to the Super League crown, confidently dispatching Panathinaikos 2:0 with an assured display at the Olympic Stadium. In the first half, Mauricio opened the scoring with an early goal at point blank range, before Leo Jaba doubled the advantage on 47 minutes after more slack Panathinaikos defending. Panathinaikos stay in sixth as their top-five hopes took a damaging blow, while PAOK maintain their seven-point lead over Olympiacos who comfortably defeated bottom club Apollon Smyrnis 2:0 on Monday with an own goal from Giannis Stathis and a clever finish by Egyptian forward Ahmed Hassan. Apollon are 12 points away from exiting the automatic drop zone, with their survival hopes all but dead.

Reigning Greek champions AEK gave yet another poor performance, as the Kitrinomavri conceded a lacklustre 0:2 defeat to Aris in Thessaloniki with Daniel Larsson and Lindsay Rose hitting the target for the hosts. As a result of their win and Panathinaikos’ loss, Aris now boast a six-point advantage over the Greens in fifth spot, and if PAOK or AEK win the Greek Cup, they’re on course for a place in the 2019/2020 UEFA Europa League.

Damir Canadi’s Atromitos moved into third place after thrashing inconsistent Panionios 3:0 at home, and with AEK losing, they’re now ahead of the Enosis due to their superior head-to-head record. Incidentally, Atromitos are due to host AEK at the Peristeri Stadium on March 17, a game which could potentially decide the fate of third position.

Asteras Tripolis eased their relegation fears, defeating seventh-placed Panetolikos 3:0 with a clinical showing. In 14th place, Levadiakos had the chance to leapfrog PAS Giannina into 13th after the latter drew 0:0 with mid-table Xanthi, but they were held to a frustrating 1:1 tie by in-form Lamia. OFI remained in 15th after playing out a goalless draw with fellow strugglers AEL in Heraklion.
