SLGR Standings: PAOK register vital point in Athens, Aris move into fifth

On Sunday evening, all eyes were on the OAKA, as AEK hosted PAOK in a headline derby. After Mauricio gifted PAOK the lead, forward Leo Jaba received two yellow cards in quick succession, but despite desperate AEK pressing, the best the Athenians could muster was a late equaliser from Ezequiel Ponce as the visitors held on for a potentially vital point. As a result of Olympiacos’ 4:0 win against Panionios, PAOK’s lead in first has now been cut to six points, however it’s a point gained for the Thessaloniki club rather than two lost. AEK sit in a distant third, trailing Olympiacos by eight points as their faint UEFA Champions League hopes took a large hit.

In Levadeia, Panathinaikos could only draw 0:0 against 15th placed Levadiakos, and with Aris beating strugglers PAS Giannina 1:0 in Thessaloniki, the Greens now fall to sixth one point behind Aris. Over in Larissa, Atromitos finally got back to winning ways with a 1:0 triumph over opponents AEL, meaning Damir Canadi’s remain in fourth and continue putting the pressure on AEK. For their part, AEL are in 12th with 20 points, and they are nervously looking over their shoulders with the relegation zone not far away.

Bottom club Apollon Smyrnis, who have long appeared doomed for relegation, dropped a 0:2 defeat at home to Asteras Tripolis, with the visiting team moving up the standings to 10th. In seventh place, Panetolikos snapped Lamia’s three-game winning streak as they won 2:0 on the road, while OFI and Xanthi drew a blank in Heraklion. OFI are in 13th with 17 points and Xanthi occupy eighth.
