AEK END DERBY HOODOO

The curse has finally been broken. For the first time in 14 derby matches, AEK emerged victorious in a game against either Olympiacos, Panathinaikos or PAOK, defeating their Athenian opponents 1-0 at the Olympic Stadium thanks to a fantastic strike from Sergio Araujo in the eighth minute of play. AEK’s last derby triumph in all competitions had arrived on the 1st of April 2018 against Panathinaikos at the OAKA (3-0).

AEK’s derby results in all competitions since April 2018:

12/05/2018: AEK - PAOK - 0-2

23/09/2018: PAOK - AEK - 2-0

07/10/2018: AEK - Olympiacos - 1-1

03/11/2018: Panathinaikos - AEK - 0-0

03/02/2019: AEK - PAOK - 1-1

17/02/2019: Olympiacos - AEK - 4-1

09/03/2019: AEK - Panathinaikos - 0-0

11/05/2019: AEK - PAOK - 0-1

29/09/2019: AEK - PAOK - 2-2

27/10/2019: Olympiacos - AEK - 2-0

10/11/2019: Panathinaikos - AEK - 3-2

12/01/2020: PAOK - AEK - 1-0

26/01/2020: AEK - Olympiacos - 0-0

09/02/2020: AEK - Panathinaikos - 1-0

AEK, with 44 points on the board, now boast a confident seven-point advantage over Panathinaikos with 23 rounds in the books. However, on the other hand, the Enosis are still 13 points behind league leaders Olympiacos, with the Athens-based club left to fight for a place in the 2020/2021 UEFA Europa League.

ATROMITOS ONE MONTH WITHOUT A GOAL

The barren streak continues for Atromitos.

At the weekend, the Peristeri outfit looked well positioned to earn a positive result against title-chasing Olympiacos at home after Omar Elabdellaoui received a second yellow card, however Ahmed Hassan headed in a last-gasp winner for the visitors. If we take all tournaments into account, Atromitos haven’t scored a single goal since the 1-0 victory at Panetolikos, which occured on January 11. This does not mean that Atromitos have gone a full month without scoring any goals.

Atromitos, coached by former Asteras Tripolis and Aris manager Savvas Pantelidis, occupy eighth spot of the Super League table with 26 points.

PANATHINAIKOS STREAK BROKEN

Panathinaikos’ impressive winning streak is over. Before facing AEK, the Prasini hadn’t conceded a Super League goal since January 5 against Olympiacos in Piraeus, however Araujo struck early on to end Sokratis Dioudis’ shutout streak at 474 minutes. Also, ahead of the duel with AEK at the OAKA, Panathinaikos hadn’t conceded a goal in the first half of a Super League match since the 1-1 draw at Volos NFC on December 8.
