ARIS RUN RIOT

Aris had long been waiting for a day like this. With passionate fans inside the Kleanthis Vikelidis Stadium creating a memorable pyrotechnic show, Aris subsequently produced a ruthless performance against arch-rivals PAOK, taking advantage of practically every opportunity to earn an impressive 4-2 victory.

Before the match at the weekend, Aris hadn’t beaten PAOK for 10 years since May 19, 2010 (3-2). Also, at the same time, it was the first occasion in 20 years when Aris managed to knock four goals past PAOK.

With 17 rounds in the books, Aris currently occupy fourth position of the Super League table, trailing third-placed AEK by six points.

PAOK FINALLY BEATEN

The unbeaten streak in the Super League has ended at 51 games.

Previously undefeated since March 11, 2018, when they lost to Asteras Tripolis on the road, PAOK conceded a loss in the domestic championship for the first time in 52 matches. In the first half, in-form Polish striker Karol Swiderski initially handed PAOK the lead, but Aris subsequently responded with four successive goals from Daniel Larsson, Fran Velez, Lindsay Rose and Lucas Sasha. During the closing stages, Leo Matos grabbed a consolation for the visitors, but it made little difference to the outcome.

The result in Thessaloniki means that Olympiacos’ long-standing record of 58 consecutive defeats in the Alpha Ethniki (1973/1974 season) is safe.

It must also be noted that PAOK have not won a single Super League derby against either AEK, Aris, Olympiacos or Panathinaikos under the leadership of Abel Ferreira yet, with five games having been played with the opponents in question. PAOK will have a chance to put that right when AEK visit the Toumba Stadium on matchday 18.

EL ARABI FIRING ON ALL CYLINDERS FOR OLYMPIACOS

Youssef El Arabi is continuing to prove that he was one of the best transfers of the summer.

Scoring with regularity, the Moroccan forward has been lethal for Olympiacos in the penalty box, and he grabbed the winner against Panathinaikos inside an empty Karaiskakis Stadium on Sunday as he brilliantly volleyed Mathieu Valbuena’s cross beyond Sokratis Dioudis. El Arabi is the Super League top scorer with 10 markers on the board.

Olympiacos have won every league match so far in which El Arabi has scored.
