OLYMPIACOS PRODUCE FIVE-STAR PERFORMANCE

Olympiacos had no trouble in defeating 10-man Asteras in Tripoli. Displaying free-flowing, attacking football, the Piraeus giants struck gold on five occasions as Giorgos Masouras (2), Daniel Podence and Youssef El Arabi (2) all hit the back of the net to secure a comfortable 5-0 triumph on the road. The Erythrolefki continue to lead the standings with PAOK.

Four of Olympiacos’ five goals arrived in the first half.

Interestingly, the last time when Olympiacos managed to score four goals during the opening 45 minutes of a Super League game was on March 23, 2014, when they defeated Ergotelis 4-1 at the Pankritio Stadium in Heraklion. AEK had been the last Greek team to achieve this feat in the league when they scored four in the first half of their 4-0 triumph at PAS Giannina in January 2019.

In the current season, Olympiacos had also scored five against Volos NFC at the Karaiskakis Stadium in mid-September, with the majority of goals being scored in the closing stages.

ASTERAS SUFFER REPEAT OF BIGGEST SUPER LEAGUE DEFEAT

Lightning did strike twice for Asteras.

Back in the 2016/2017 Super League season, Asteras had suffered a 5-0 loss for the first time in the first division, as Panathinaikos scored five unanswered goals in Tripoli. Following that game, the Tripoli club had never lost a game by that margin, but Olympiacos put an end to that streak with an emphatic 5-0 victory. The fact that Triantafyllos Pasalidis received a red card in the first half certainly didn’t help Asteras’ cause.
