MORE HISTORY FOR SUPERB OLYMPIACOS

Fresh from famously defeating Arsenal in the UEFA Europa League, Olympiacos duly cruised past Panetolikos in the Super League at the weekend, earning a comfortable 2-0 victory as Giorgos Masouras and Andreas Bouchalakis hit the target during the second half.

Olympiacos have become the third team in history to complete the regular season of the domestic championship without suffering a single defeat. Panathinaikos (1963/1964) and PAOK (2018/2019) previously achieved the same feat.

However, while Olympiacos do boast a commanding 14-point lead over PAOK in first place of the standings, all teams in the top six will now compete against each other again in the championship playoffs. Olympiacos recorded 20 victories and six draws in 26 regular season games.

It’s also worth noting that Olympiacos are unbeaten in the Super League since suffering a 3-1 setback in Thessaloniki against PAOK in February 2019.

AEK CONCEDE IN FIRST HALF ON MAIDEN OCCASION IN 2020

AEK, despite registering 23 attempts at goal in Nea Smyrni, were held to a 1-1 draw by dogged Panionios, with the Enosi only equalising in stoppage time through a stunning marker from the energetic Viktor Klonaridis.

Dimitris Emmanouilidis, who opened the scoring for Panionios at point blank range, became the first player in 2020 to score in the maiden 45 minutes of a Super League match against AEK. The Kitrinomavri hadn’t conceded a single goal during the first half of any league game since conceding a 2-0 defeat at Olympiacos in late October.

The pulsating draw snapped AEK’s six-game winning streak against Panionios.

On a more positive note, AEK did at least protect their unbeaten run, with Klonaridis making sure that Massimo Carrera’s troops avoided defeat in the 12th consecutive match. The most recent AEK defeat was witnessed at the Toumba Stadium against PAOK in January.

PAOK IN TROUBLE

PAOK’s title defence appears to have fallen apart. Last week, the Dikefalos tou Vorra conceded a vital home loss to Olympiacos, and they followed that up with an underwhelming 1-1 draw at Xanthi. PAOK, one point ahead of third-placed AEK, now trail league leaders Olympiacos by a large 14 points after they were docked seven points for their involvement in a multi-ownership case with Xanthi.

Christos Lisgaras, the scorer of the equaliser, ensured that Xanthi became only the fourth team to find the net against PAOK during the first half of a 2019/2020 Super League game, following in the footsteps of Aris, Atromitos and Panathinaikos. PAOK have only earned two victories in their last five matches in the championship.

MORE NOTABLE FACTS

  • Aris, dropping down to sixth spot with a surprise home defeat to Atromitos, are winless in four Super League matches;
